What are the best sunscreens to use on the face?
While you can use any sunscreen on your face, it’s often better to choose one specifically formulated for facial skin. The skin on your face tends to be more sensitive, and some heavier sunscreens can clog pores, leading to breakouts or irritation.
Fortunately, there are many great options designed just for the face. Some facial moisturizers include built-in SPF, offering both hydration and sun protection in one step. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying sunscreen daily—even during the winter months—and choosing a product with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Tinted moisturizers with SPF provide light coverage and sun protection, helping streamline your morning routine. Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxide can also help prevent hyperpigmentation. For convenient touch-ups throughout the day, powder sunscreens are a great option—and they double as setting powders.
These products give you flexibility in finding sun protection that suits your skin type, whether it’s dry, oily, acne-prone, or somewhere in between. And finally, don’t forget to top off your sun protection with a wide-brimmed hat!
What is the best way to apply sunscreen?
Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. It takes at least a shot glass full of sunscreen to cover the body adequately. It is prudent to reapply sunscreen every two hours when out in the sun and again after getting out of the water or sweating profusely. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to areas such as the back of your ears, the back of your neck, the top of your feet, and your scalp, especially if you have thinning hair. We also recommend using sun-protective clothing, such as rash guards and hats. Lastly, protect your lips by using a lip moisturizer with SPF protection.
