Spokane, WA, February 13, 2026– Advanced Dermatology & Skin Surgery is excited to share that fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon, double board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Courtney Gwinn was featured in a recent Everyday Health article titled “What Happens to Your Skin When You Wear Makeup Every Day?” The article explores common myths, potential skin concerns, and dermatologist-recommended best practices for individuals who wear makeup regularly.
In the feature, Dr. Gwinn provides expert insight into how makeup can impact skin health over time, particularly for patients prone to acne or inflammatory skin conditions. She explains that while makeup is often used to improve appearance, it can sometimes worsen underlying skin issues if not used carefully.
“Makeup is used to conceal imperfections, but it in turn ‘plugs’ pores and hair follicles and contributes to the acne cycle,” says Courtney Gwinn, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon in the Greater Spokane area. “This is particularly true when you’re trying to cover active pimples.”
Dr. Gwinn also highlights an important clue for patients trying to determine whether makeup is contributing to irritation or breakouts.
“If flares appear primarily where makeup is applied – around the mouth, eyes, or along the hairline – or started after introducing new products, makeup might be the culprit,” she notes.
The article emphasizes that patients with conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis should be especially mindful of how and when they use makeup. During periods of irritation or flare-ups, Dr. Gwinn recommends simplifying routines and allowing the skin time to heal.
“Take a break during flares,” Gwinn advises. “If you have a preexisting skin condition that’s flaring, take a break from makeup until irritation resolves. Then, reintroduce one product every one to two weeks to identify which one is the culprit behind your flares.”
You don’t need to give up makeup to protect your skin. Key tips include removing makeup nightly, choosing noncomedogenic, fragrance-free products, cleaning brushes regularly, discarding expired items, maintaining a consistent skincare routine with cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF, and taking breaks during flares. For ongoing issues, a dermatologist can help tailor products and treatments so makeup can be worn more safely.
Dr. Gwinn’s contributions reinforce Advanced Dermatology & Skin Surgery’s commitment to patient education and evidence-based care. The practice encourages patients to seek professional guidance for persistent skin concerns and to work with a dermatologist to develop a skincare and makeup routine that supports long-term skin health.
