Dr. Courtney Gwinn Explains the Importance of Moisturizing the Neck for Healthy, Youthful Skin.

Many people focus on moisturizing their face but forget an equally important area: the neck. Advanced Dermatology & Skin Surgery highlights advice from Dr. Courtney Gwinn, a Board-Certified Dermatologist and Cosmetic Surgeon serving patients in the Greater Spokane and Inland Northwest areas, on why neck hydration is essential for maintaining healthy, youthful skin.

According to Dr. Gwinn, the skin on the neck is naturally thinner and has fewer oil-producing sebaceous glands, which makes it prone to dryness.

“The neck’s skin produces less collagen and is more delicate than the face, so moisturizing helps keep it hydrated and firm while slowing the appearance of wrinkles,” Dr. Gwinn explains.

Dryness itself doesn’t cause wrinkles, but it can emphasize existing lines.

Dr. Gwinn recommends regular moisturizers, as well as products that promote collagen production to reduce and prevent wrinkles. Key ingredients to look for include:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Retinoids
  • Vitamin C
  • Niacinamide
  • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs)

She cautions that AHAs and retinoids may cause initial dryness, so it’s best to start slowly. Sunscreen is also critical:

“Many patients apply sunscreen to the face but forget the neck,” she notes. “Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two to three hours, especially if you’re outdoors in Spokane or Coeur d’Alene.”

Neck care should be part of your daily face-washing routine:

  1. Wash the neck daily with your regular facial cleanser.
  2. Pat dry gently with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing.
  3. Apply moisturizer, followed by SPF 30+ sunscreen.
  4. If using multiple products, layer from lightest to heaviest.
  5. Use gentle, upward circular motions to avoid tugging delicate skin.

Dr. Gwinn recommends moisturizing once or twice daily, with an optional midday application during dry seasons for extra hydration.

In addition to topical care, Dr. Gwinn highlights lifestyle factors that impact neck skin health. Smoking, dehydration, and poor diet can accelerate visible aging. Maintaining a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding tobacco can help keep the skin in the neck area looking youthful and healthy.
